Hi! I am Dr. Edwin Kent Morris. I want to briefly introduce myself and discuss my educational background.

Education: I earned my Masters in Political Science and completed my doctorate at Virginia Tech. I attended Radford University as an undergraduate, completing two bachelor’s degrees in Social Science and Political Science, respectively. 

About me: Millennial. Scorpio. I grew up in the 1990s in the town of Rocky Mount, VA, located in Franklin County. High School class of 2001. Avid music fan and vinyl record enthusiast. My favorite band is Phish, who I have seen approximately 60 times live in concert. I like cats.

Civics teaches us how to be responsible for ourselves in relation to others, as it aims to instill a healthy sense of patriotism and civic duty among citizens.  Civics is not about teaching blind patriotism or sacrificing one's ability to think critically about politics (indeed, that would be downright un-American). Likewise, civics is not a matter of political ideology or indoctrination. Ultimately, a civics and economics education is essential to the practice of self-governance and the vibrancy of democracy in America, as it is an absolutely crucial component for cultivating "informed and engaged citizens" (DPS Social Studies Handbook, 2023).
