Bachelors of Science, Liberty University

Mr. Donald Smith

I am a native of Danville, VA.  I attended school in Danville Public Schools throughout my youth.  I graduated from George Washington High School in 1986, where I was an outstanding athlete in football, basketball, and track. At GWHS, I participated in fine arts, where I won numerous awards, and I participated in chorus, where I was named Most Outstanding Bass my senior year (1986).

I earned an athletic scholarship in football from Liberty University, in Lynchburg, VA., where I continued to experience success in football and the fine arts.   In 1987, at Liberty University, I was named Artist of the Year.  During some of my summer breaks, I would return home and paint the backdrops for the community plays; The Sound Of Music and The Jungle Book. At Liberty, I was named a Pre-Season All-American in football, and in 1990, I was drafted into the National Football League by the Minnesota Vikings.  In 1991, I spent one season with the Dallas Cowboys.  After that season, I left the NFL to play in the Canadian Football League.  I spent 8 seasons in the CFL, where I was selected as a three-time Eastern All-Star (93,94, 98), a Southern All-Star (95), and a three-time InterGold All-Star (96, 97, 98).

Throughout my professional CFL football career, I would return to Danville in some of my off-season.   During that time, I would work in the community as a volunteer within the DPS system and/or as a substitute teacher.  After retiring from the CFL, I returned home to teach for the Danville Public School System. I spent three years (2000-2002) coaching football at Liberty University, my alma mater.  I then returned to the Danville Public School System, where I continue to serve as an educator.

My passion was to return home to work with the youth of Danville, VA.  Although I have been working with young people since 1990, I continue to work with young people from Danville and Pittsylvania County.  I have spent over 20 years in the Danville Public School System as a special education teacher, a football coach, a wrestling coach, a volunteer track coach, and a mentor.  I have been married for over 28 years to his loving wife, Denise.  My wife and I have two children, Denelle and Donald, and I pastor St. Matthews Baptist Church in Pittsylvania, Co.
