School Board Wrap Up - March 19

During their regular meeting on Thursday evening, the Danville School Board made the following recognitions:

  • Dr. Hairston’s Region VI Superintendent of the Year honor, in a surprise recognition by Roanoke Superintendent Dr. Ken Nicely and Pittsylvania County Superintendent Steve Mayhew
  • Dr. Antonio Hairston and the Adult and Career Education Center for 100 adult learning graduates over the past four years
  • GW Wrestler Donovan Reaves for his accomplishments, including 3-time State Qualifier at 285 lbs, 2025-26 6th place finisher, 2025-26 Region 4D Runner up, and an overall record of 66-20.
  • March 2026 as Developmental Disabilities Month
  • Winners of the district-wide reading, science, history, and mathematics competitions

 

The board heard the following communication items:

  • Chief Financial Officer Andrea Gillus presented the most recent Accounts Payable Warrants.
  • Gillus presented the 2026-2027 Superintendent’s Proposed Budget, which addresses the following priorities: investing in youth and student achievement, high quality instructional materials, investing in employees, and strengthening engagement. The proposed budget is $122.7 million total, inclusive of textbook and School Nutrition Funds.
  • Chief Academic Officer Dr. Takiwi Babalola and Danville Regional Foundation Program Director and Senior Program Officer Susanne Bell provided an update on the Out-of-School Time (OST) Leadership Lab, which is a multi-month professional development experience for after school and summer learning professionals. Federal Program Director and Assistant Director, respectively, Catiia Greene and Sherry Hicks also gave their experience in being part of the cohort.
  • Workbased Learning Coordinator Dr. Ako Barnes provided an overview of the Business pathway in our Career and Technical Programming.

 

The board took the following actions:

  • Approved an update to the 26-27 Academic Calendar that changes the first day of school to August 5, due to the August 4 primary election day, presented by Director of Assessment and State Reporting Olivia McCraw.
  • Approved personnel recommendations presented by Chief Human Resources Officer Angela Wimberly
  • Approved the finance report presented by Gillus
