Student Discipline
Overview
The Student Support Services Department publishes and provides guidance to schools regarding the Student Code of Responsibilities, Expectations and Supports (CORES). The Department also holds disciplinary hearings when students violate the CORES and are recommended for long-term suspension from the Danville Public Schools. Additionally, the Department operates an Alternative to Suspension Program for secondary students who are short-term suspended from school.
Student CORES
The Student CORES is a guide that defines appropriate and inappropriate behavior in Danville Public Schools. The Student CORES also covers disciplinary consequences and interventions that may be prescribed as appropriate.
Alternative to Suspension Program (ASP)
The ASP serves middle and high school students who have been suspended from school for up to 10 days and meet certain criteria. The program is an opportunity for students to have a safe and restorative space with adults during their period of suspension from school. Students who participate in the program will be counted present for attendance purposes and will have their out-of-school suspension days reduced for each day served.
Disciplinary Hearings
When a student has committed a serious violation of the Student CORES, the school may recommend long-term suspension or expulsion from the Danville Public Schools. If an administrator determines a suspension in excess of ten days appropriate, the student is entitled to a hearing before a disciplinary Hearing/Review Officer. The Student Support Services Department schedules and organizes these hearings to ensure due process is afforded to every student throughout the process.
