Once your application is submitted, it will be reviewed by Human Resources and/or school administrators. If your qualifications match an open position, you may be contacted for further steps in the hiring process. 

Candidates selected for consideration will be contacted by a school administrator or HR representative to schedule an in-person or virtual interview. Meeting minimum qualifications does not guarantee an interview.

Yes. To request a transfer of accrued sick leave, please complete the Sick Leave Transfer Request Form from your former district and email it to: Lolita Martin, HR Analyst, lmartin@mail.dps.k12.va.us   

To attain a Virginia teaching license with a valid out-of-state teaching license, you will need to follow these steps: 

Submit an Application: Apply through the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) website for an out-of-state license. You will need to complete an online application through the VDOE VALO portal. 

Verify Credentials: Provide official transcripts from all colleges/universities where you earned your degrees. The VDOE will assess whether your education meets Virginia’s standards. 

Submit Proof of Out-of-State Certification: Provide a copy of your valid out-of-state teaching license. The VDOE will verify the equivalency of your license with Virginia’s requirements. 

Passing Scores on Required Assessments: Depending on the subject and grade level, you may be required to submit passing scores for Virginia’s teacher certification exams (e.g., Praxis), unless your out-of-state certification is deemed equivalent. 

Background Check: Submit to a background check, which includes fingerprinting, as required by Virginia state law. 

Additional Documentation: You may need to provide evidence of teaching experience or professional development, depending on the specific requirements for the type of license you are applying for. 

To become a licensed teacher in Virginia after completing an approved teaching program from a regionally accredited college or university, you will need to follow these steps: 

1. Complete a Virginia Department of Education (VDOE)-Approved Teacher Preparation Program 

Your program must be from a regionally accredited institution and be approved by the VDOE. 

The program should include required coursework, student teaching or clinical practice, and meet the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) for the specific subject and grade level. 

2. Pass Required Assessments 

Content Area Test: Depending on the subject you plan to teach, you will need to pass the appropriate Praxis Subject Assessments or other content exams as required by the VDOE. 

3. Submit Your Application for Licensure 

Complete the Online Application: Visit the Virginia Department of Education website and submit an online application for licensure. 

4. Submit Official Transcripts: Provide official transcripts from the accredited college or university where you completed your teacher preparation program. 

5. Provide Proof of Program Completion: Submit verification that you have completed an approved teacher preparation program, including your student teaching/clinical practice. 

6. Complete a Background Check 

All candidates must undergo a criminal background check and fingerprinting as part of the licensure process. 

7. Provide Verification of Any Prior Teaching Experience (if applicable) 

If you have prior teaching experience, you may need to submit documentation of your teaching history for the VDOE to assess. 

6. Pay the Application Fee 

There is a non-refundable application fee for the licensure process, which can be paid through the VDOE portal. Danville Public Schools pays this fee on behalf of our hired, licensed teachers. 

7. Wait for Approval 

Once you have submitted all documents and passed the required exams, the VDOE will review your application and issue your teaching license if all requirements are met. 

If documentation is missing or incomplete, a Provisional License good for up to three years may be issued. During this time, you will need to complete additional professional development and may be required to pass any additional exams or assessments specific to your field. 

1. Career Switcher Alternate Route  

For individuals with a bachelor’s degree plus 3–5 years of full-time work experience  

Requirements: 

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution. 

Completion (or equivalent) of endorsement-area coursework or experience. 

Passing qualifying scores on Virginia professional assessments (e.g., VCLA, Praxis). 

Structured in levels: 

Level I: 180 hours of instruction + field experience → earn a 1‑year Provisional (Career Switcher) license 

Level II: First-year teaching (with seminars and mentoring). 

Level III (if needed): Additional support. 

After completion and recommendation by the employing agency, eligible for a 10‑year renewable license 

 

2. iteach Alternate Route 

A private program accredited by CAEP, approved by VDOE  

Requirements: 

Bachelor’s degree (min GPA 2.5, last 60 credits). 

Completion of endorsement-area requirements. 

Passing Virginia licensure assessments. 

Employment with a partner school division. 

Participants receive a Provisional license, complete a one-year residency, and upon completion earn a recommendation for a 10‑year renewable license 

 

3. General Alternate Route via Provisional License 

For individuals employed by a Virginia public or accredited nonpublic school seeking PreK–12 endorsements (excluding preK-3/6, special ed, reading specialist, and certain licensed personnel)  

Requirements: 

Bachelor’s degree. 

Completed some endorsement coursework or training, or pass a rigorous academic subject test. 

School division recommendation. 

3-year nonrenewable Provisional License, during which professional studies and endorsement requirements must be fulfilled 

 

4. Provisional (Special Education) Route 

Specifically for special education endorsements 

Requirements: 

Employed as a special ed teacher and recommended by the division. 

Bachelor’s degree. 

Assigned mentor with active special ed endorsement. 

Plan of study toward special ed requirements, including ≥3 semester hours in legal, foundational, and identification aspects. 

3‑year nonrenewable Provisional (Special Ed) License  

 

5. Technical Professional License (for CTE) 

Designed for career and technical education (CTE) endorsements 

Requirements: 

At least a high school diploma. 

Nine semester hours of professional studies coursework. 

Industry certification in the subject area. 

Eligible individuals may receive a Provisional Technical Professional License—often with three years to complete requirement 

Yes, Professional Teacher Assessments are required to obtain a Virginia teaching license, depending on the subject and grade level you plan to teach. These assessments ensure that you meet the professional and content knowledge standards set by the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE). 

Here are the key assessments that may be required: 

1. Praxis Subject Assessments (Content Area Tests) 

Required for many teaching fields: Depending on your subject area and grade level, you will need to take the relevant Praxis Subject Assessment (or other equivalent exams) in your content area. 

Examples: 

Praxis 5001: Elementary Education: Multiple Subjects 

Praxis 5003: Mathematics Content Knowledge for Secondary Teachers 

Praxis 5543: Social Studies: Content Knowledge 

The required Praxis tests will depend on your teaching field. You can find specific requirements for your area of certification on the VDOE website. 

2. Reading for Virginia Educators (RVE) 

Required for elementary, special education, and reading specialists: This test is specifically designed for candidates who plan to teach elementary education, special education, or become reading specialists in Virginia. 

The RVE evaluates your knowledge of reading instruction, reading comprehension, and literacy development. 

 

3. Specialty Assessments for Specific Licensure Areas 

In some cases, if you're applying for certification in a specialized area (e.g., world languages, special education, or career and technical education), there may be additional assessments specific to that field. 

You can visit the Virginia Department of Education's licensure page or check the Praxis Test Requirements for Virginia on the official Educational Testing Service (ETS) website for a full list of exams required based on your certification area. 

To be eligible for tuition reimbursement, you must meet the following requirements: 

Be a current DPS employee. 

Submit a completed Tuition Reimbursement Form found on the Division Intranet. 

Provide a copy of your transcript showing course completion. 

Include proof of payment for the course.

Individuals enrolled in a college or university program that requires a supervised field experience, such as student teaching, practicum hours, or an internship, may qualify for placement in Danville Public Schools. All candidates must be formally recommended by their institution and approved by the Human Resources Department before beginning any work in schools.

The New Teacher Academy is a district-led professional learning experience designed to help new teachers build capacity, grow in their practice, and start the year with confidence. Through sessions led by the Teacher Quality Coordinators, teachers explore essential topics such as classroom management, instructional strategies, and student engagement. Participants practice key teaching moves, collaborate with fellow new teachers, and receive ready-to-use resources to support their classrooms. The academy also builds a strong sense of community among educators committed to making a lasting impact on students. 

New Teacher Academy sessions are held once per month and meet according to grade spans to encourage shared learning and district-wide collaboration. 

The Teacher Quality Coordinators are responsible for designing and leading a comprehensive support system for new teachers in Danville Public Schools. They oversee the mentoring program, facilitate meetings and professional development, and ensure that new teachers are paired with trained mentors. They also lead the New Teacher Academy. The Coordinators’ goal is to create a supportive, structured experience that helps new teachers grow in effectiveness, feel connected to their school community, and positively impact student achievement.
