Discipline

Overview

The Student Support Services Department publishes and provides guidance to schools regarding the Student Code of Responsibilities, Expectations and Supports (CORES).  The Department also holds disciplinary hearings when students violate the CORES and are recommended for long-term suspension from the Danville Public Schools. Additionally, the Department operates an Alternative to Suspension Program for secondary students who are short-term suspended from school.

Student CORES

The Student CORES is a guide that defines appropriate and inappropriate behavior in Danville Public Schools.  The Student CORES also covers disciplinary consequences and interventions that may be prescribed as appropriate.

Virtual Alternative to Suspension Program

Overview
Administrators may assign students to Virtual Suspension (VS) as a constructive alternative to out-of-school suspension. This program replaces the former ASP process.

PowerSchool Attendance Code: VS (Virtual Suspension).
Attendance Status: Students assigned to VS are not counted as absent, provided all assigned work is completed upon return.
Code Adjustment Policy: If required work is incomplete upon the student's return, the attendance code must be updated from VS to S (Suspension) until the work is completed through meaningful engagement.
Technology Access: Admin/Designated staff must ensure the student has a functioning Chromebook and charger assigned before the start of the suspension period.

Implementation Guidelines
Elementary Schools

  • Log-in & Schedule: Students must log in by 8:30 a.m. (or the designated start time established by the school).
  • Monitoring & Attendance: SEL Teachers will monitor virtual participation and take daily attendance.
  • Non-Attendance Protocol: If a student is not online by the designated start time, school staff will contact parents/guardians. Students not logged in by 9:30 a.m. will be marked absent (VS converted to unexcused absent/S).
  • Academic Expectations: Students complete assigned work via iReady and/or physical work packets provided by their teacher(s).

Middle Schools

  • Academic Expectations: Students complete coursework via iReady and/or Canvas, as directed by classroom teachers and building administrators.
  • Attendance & Monitoring: (The ISS teacher will check attendance daily between 7:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. The school will determine the length of time to be on virtually with the ISS teacher).

High Schools

  • Academic Expectations: Students complete all coursework posted in Canvas.
  • Attendance & Monitoring: (Insert daily submission or check-in requirement and designated staff supervisor/contact).

Disciplinary Hearings

When a student has committed a serious violation of the Student CORES, the school may recommend long-term suspension or expulsion from the Danville Public Schools.  If an administrator determines a suspension in excess of ten days appropriate, the student is entitled to a hearing before a disciplinary Hearing/Review Officer.  The Student Support Services Department schedules and organizes these hearings to ensure due process is afforded to every student throughout the process.
