Course Description:
This portion of the Nurse Aide Program continues to provide each student with a didactic and clinical / lab enhanced learning environment with increased emphasis placed on advanced practices. Students will review and expand on all areas from Nurse Aide I especially in the areas of Basic Human Needs, Communication, Infection Control, Safety and Mobility. Students will also expand in areas of developing basic nursing assistant skills including vital signs, bathing and personal hygiene, and bed making in addition to proper positioning of clients including proper body alignment and assured range of motion. Hospital bed operations including applying pressure mattresses. Expanded knowledge of Elastic Stocking Application and proper documentation and reporting findings to the charge nurse. Emphasis will also be placed on Nutrition, Hydration and Elimination with a broadened horizon of Body Systems and changes that occur during the aging process. Emphasis will be placed on preparing students to take the Virginia State Board of Nursing CNA / NNAAP Certification Examination. Students must meet all VBON / VDOE requirements to include classroom, lab and clinical clock hours for state certification examination.

Instructional Philosophy:
The instructors of GWHS Health and Medical Science Pathways ( Nurse Aide I and II ) dedicate their efforts to provide a diverse group of students with access to a rigorous Career and Technical Education certification program. Regular and prompt class attendance is an essential part of the educational experience. George Washington High School expects students to exercise good judgment regarding attendance and absences. Students will accept full responsibility for ensuring their work does not suffer because of absences. All students are expected to attend every scheduled class on time. Exceptions may be made for illness and valid emergencies.( Note: There are required program seat/lab/clinical hours in place in order to be considered a program completer and a recipient of a Nursing Assistant Certificate and to be eligible for taking the VBON CNA State Certification Licensure Exam. If a student fails to meet these requirements they will not be eligible for the Nursing Assistant Program Completer Certificate or privilege of sitting for the VBON CNA Licensure State Examination.

Course Description:
Nurse Aide I, offered as an occupational preparation course beginning at the 11th grade level, is regulated under the Virginia Board of Nursing. It emphasizes the study of nursing occupations as related to the healthcare system. Students study growth and development across the lifespan, simple body structure and function and medical terminology. They are introduced to concepts of infection prevention and disease processes. Students receive entry level skill training in patient nurse aide relationships; measuring and recording of vital signs, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (American Heart Healthcare Certification), and general patient care. Work based learning is introduced as part of this course. The Nurse Aide I course introduces students to careers in nursing, health profession, and STEM-H professions. Students must maintain American Heart Association’s CPR & Emergency Cardiovascular Care (ECC) training during this course. Students will be active members of HOSA Future Health Professionals activities which will develop leadership, interpersonal, and career skills. Students must meet and complete all requirements with emphasis being placed on preparing students to take the Virginia State Board of Nursing CNA / NNAAP Certification Examination. Students must complete and meet all VBON and VDOE requirements to include classroom, lab and clinical clock hours for state certification examination.

Purpose:
The GWHS Nursing Careers program provides high school students with an opportunity to explore careers in the field of nursing and begin to pursue, in high school, a pathway leading to a nursing health career. This will include entry level healthcare certification (Certified Nursing Assistant), DCC dual enrollment credits, WPR Certification Opportunity, American Heart BLS Certification, Required WBL Direct Patient Care Clinical Hours in Long Term Care and Acute Care Clinical Facilities. Only students who attend school regularly, take rigorous academic and technical courses, and demonstrate appropriate interpersonal skills and behavior in school and the clinical workplace environment will be able to successfully achieve the goals established in the Nursing Assistant/Careers class. Hence, to qualify for entry into the nursing class and to remain in the program throughout high school, students are expected to maintain high standards academically, socially, and behaviorally.NOTE: This program has specific state laws and regulations from the governing Virginia State Board of Nursing.

A student’s words and actions should always show consideration for others. Maintain a positive and respectful attitude in class, labs, and clinical sites.

You must respect your workspace by keeping it clean and always maintain a safe environment.

No food or drinks are allowed in the classroom/lab or clinical sites except at the discretion and permission of your instructor. Follow all GWHS student code of conduct guidelines.

You must work at an appropriate noise level. During class discussions, one person should speak at a time. Raise your hand to be recognized.

ALL STUDENTS MUST ADHERE TO ALL NEW DPS/ GWHS CELL(see page 62 of DPS student core Handbook) PHONE/ELECTRONIC/EARBUD POLICIES . STUDENTS WILL BE ASKED TO PLACE ALL CELL PHONES IN DESIGNATED AREA ACCORDING TO THE INSTRUCTOR. ALL OTHER NON ISSUED SCHOOL DEVICES SUCH AS EAR PODS, SMART WATCHES AND I PADS ARE TO BE TURNED OFF AND PUT AWAY IN YOUR BACKPACKS. THESE DEVICES ARE TO NEVER BE OUT OR USED IN THIS CLASS FOR BEST CLASSROOM BEHAVIOR PRACTICES.

All chromebooks will be turned off & put away unless asked by the Instructor to get them out.

Nursing Assistant I and II students are expected to cooperate at all times with their teachers, peers, and any outside authorities. During clinical experiences, students must cooperate with patients, co-workers, and any nurse supervisors or charge nurses.

Nurse Aide I and II students are expected to bring all necessary materials to class. Students should turn in work on or before the given deadline.

MakeupWork Policy: Students are responsible for making up all assignments according GWHS Late Work Policy.

Students must always comply with all clinical facility rules and regulations related to all HIPAA standards. If a student under any circumstances brings a cell phone, smart watch, takes any videos or pictures in the clinical setting and decides to post or is a part of someone else's post in any manner within or part of the clinical facility . Students will no longer be allowed to return to clinical facility or be considered as a completer of this said Nurse Aide Program.

Dress Code: Follow DPS Student Cores Pages 58 - 59 and adhere to all Program Dress Codes for Skills Labs and Clinical Rotations. Remember we are Future Health Professionals.

Ⅲ. Skills Lab / Clinical Site Guidelines:

Operate equipment only after lecture and demonstration of use at the discretion of your Instructor.

Never unplug equipment with wet hands.
-
No horseplay allowed at any time in the skills lab or clinical setting for safety reasons and cost of equipment.
-
Handle Hazardous waste and chemicals by OSHA regulations.
-
Report any defective equipment immediately to the instructor.
-
Report any accidents immediately to the instructor.
-
Close all cabinet doors and drawers when not in use.
-
Returns supplies to appropriate storage after use.
-
Clean up the lab area after use. ( Always leave it as you found it )

Come to all Skills Lab and Clinical Rotations in accordance with dress code / fingernail guidelines and policy. Lab Jackets/Hair Pulled Back .

Skills Lab Area is not to be used unless under the direct supervision and instruction of your instructor at a 10: 1 student / teacher ratio.

All students in the skills or clinical site areas must abide by all GWHS Core Student Responsibilities and GWHS Nursing Assistant Program.

Grades are determined on a point system.

Each assignment, labs, clinicals rotations, quiz, and test will have a certain number of points.

Your grade will be the number you have correct, divided by the number possible.

VI. Academic Monitoring:

VII. Attendance Policy: SEE GWHS Student Core HANDBOOK IN ADDITION
The Nursing Assistant/ Careers is a program involving classroom, lab/skill activities, and
On-site clinical training. As we are a career training class, attendance is of the
utmost importance to our instructors and clinical rotation facilities. Policies on
attendance are stringently adhered to in the Nursing class as they will be in the work
environment . As a member of the NA class, the student must attend school regularly.
The Virginia Department of Education and The Virginia State Licensure Boards require
specific hourly attendance before you are eligible to take the Virginia certification
exams. The policy will be followed by all students within the HCA. (16 ABSENCE LIMIT)

Upon the 5th absence, the student is given a warning/parental contact.
-
Upon the 8th absence, guidance referral.
-
Upon the 16th absence,NA I Students will be at jeopardy of not being able to continue to the next year or semester of the program or will not receive a certificate of completion or dual enrollment credits if applicable. Upon the 16th absence, NAII Students will be in jeopardy of not receiving a certificate for completion of the program,qualification to sit for a state licensure exam or dual enrollment credits if applicable. (Based on VBON AND VDOE CTE VERSO REQUIREMENTS SET FOR SPECIFIC PROGRAMS OF STUDY)

NO STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO MISS MORE THAN 16 DAYS AND REMAIN IN THE NURSE AIDE PROGRAM THEY HAVE AT THAT POINT NOT MET THE STATE REQUIRED SEAT HOURS TO MOVE FORWARD AS A SENIOR IF THEY ARE IN THE NURSE AIDE I CLASS , ACHIEVE DE CREDIT, BE CONSIDERED A SENIOR NURSE AIDE COMPLETER AND WILL NOT RECEIVE A CERTIFICATE OR BE ELIGIBLE TO TAKE THE NNAAP VIRGINIA STATE BOARD OF NURSING LICENSURE STATE EXAMINATION.

DISMISSAL FROM CLINICAL SITE: IF A STUDENT IS ASKED BY A CLINICAL SITE NOT TO RETURN TO FOR ANY VIOLATION THAT STUDENT WILL NO LONGER BE ABLE TO REMAIN IN THE NURSE AIDE PROGRAM. SCHOOL ADMINISTRATION WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DISCIPLINARY ACTIONS ACCORDINGLY.
NOTE:
A STUDENT’S OPPORTUNITY TO RECEIVE HOMEBOUND STATUS IS NOT AN OPTION IN THE NURSE I OR II CLASSES DUE TO STATE REQUIRED SEAT HOURS/ SKILLS LAB HOURS/ CLINICAL ROTATION HOURS.
VIII. Make Up Policy ( See Student Handbook)
Missed class notes are the responsibility of the student. Make-up assignments will be in a folder with the student’s name and date of absence. All assignments are to be made-up in accordance with the GWHS Student Handbook Policy..If an assignment is due on the day you are absent, it will be due on the day you return to school. If a student is absent on the day of a scheduled test, they must make it up on the day they return to class after school or at the instructor's discretion. No credit will be given for late work beyond this time frame. The student will be responsible for asking for the missed assignments, and making arrangements to schedule the makeup test or labs on the day they return to school. (If a student needs further assistance or extended time on an assignment they are responsible for getting with the instructor to make these arrangements. A ZERO WILL BE PLACED IN POWERSCHOOL UNTIL MISSED WORK IS TURNED IN ACCORDING TO GWHS HANDBOOK POLICY. YOUR INSTRUCTOR WILL MAKE EVERY EFFORT TO ASSIST YOU IN GETTING YOUR MISSED ASSIGNMENTS COMPLETED IN A TIMELY MANNER .
IX. Late Assignment Policy
All assignments are due on the due date at the beginning of class. If your assignment is 1 day late, you will receive a 5 point deduction. If it is 2 days 10 point deduction 3 or more days late, you will receive a zero for the assignment. See Instructor/Teacher for any special circumstances or other considerations.
Tardies
Follow GWHS student policy handbook. OUR GOAL IS TO BE ALWAYS BE ON TIME AND READY TO LEARN.
X. NURSE AIDE I and II Classroom Dress Code:
It is the desire of the Health Career Programs at GWHS to set an example to the rest of the student body on campus. We will set this example by wearing attire that is appropriate and professional for students in accordance with the GWHS Student Core Guidelines. During all Clinical Site Rotations Nurse Aide I and II students must adhere to the Clinical Dress Code as indicated. STUDENTS WILL FOLLOW ALL DPS DRESS CODE POLICIES AS INDICATED IN THE STUDENT CORE HANDBOOK PAGES 58-59
XI. Clinical/Lab Dress Code:

Clinical Rotations:Uniform with Navy coordinating scrub top, pants, and optional lab coat (OSHA approved), clean wrinkle free, and well fitting. You may not wear your uniform over your clothes to clinicals. You must wear your uniform to school on clinical days. (There is not enough time for changing clothes before leaving for Clinicals)

Footwear: Mostly White or Black, solid backs and with Skid Proof Bottoms (NO CROCS) Tennis Shoe type is appropriate if not mesh.Student must wear socks.

Jewelry-one pair of small earrings, no facial or oral jewelry, no bracelets or necklaces.(No Visible Tattoos) If there is a Tattoo that is visible it has to be covered.

Watch with a second hand for taking Vital Signs.(NOTE: No smart watches of any brand).

Cleanliness is a must! Bathe, use deodorant, no perfume or scented lotions.
-
Nails should be fingertip length, no polish, no artificial nails or acrylic tips. Fingernail policy must be adhered to for skills lab and clinical areas due to infection control.This policy is for the entirety of the 2 yr. Nurse Aide I and II Program. This is an infection control policy that we must and will adhere to. Students who fail to comply will not be able to go into the skills lab area or clinical site facilities and will be at jeopardy of not being able to complete the program.

Hair should be off the face and shoulders, well groomed, and conservative (no unnatural colored hair or unnatural colored braids) Hair has to be pulled back off the collar in a neat and professional manner.(BLUE,GREEN AND PINK ARE SOME EXAMPLES OF UNNATURAL HAIR COLORS)

Nurse Aide l students must wear name badges at all times in the clinical setting.

PPE (To be worn in accordance to facility policy and procedures)

Absolutely no cell phones or any kind of electronic devices allowed in the clinical setting. Students will receive a zero and no clinical credit for the day. Other disciplinary actions may be taken. ( CELL PHONES ARE AGAINST STUDENT CLINICAL SITE GUIDELINES AND DPS/GWHS . PLEASE NOTE: INSTRUCTORS ARE ALLOWED TO HAVE CELL PHONES FOR EMERGENCY CONTACT. PARENTS SHOULD NOTIFY GWHS MAIN OFFICE FOR ANY EMERGENCIES DURING CLINICAL SITE ROTATIONS. GWHS WILL NOTIFY CLINICAL INSTRUCTOR. STUDENTS WHO DO NOT ADHERE TO THIS POLICY WILL BE REMOVED FROM THIS PROGRAM DUE TO POTENTIAL HIPAA VIOLATIONS.

If a student brings a cell phone to a clinical site which is against all clinical sites rules and regulations, the student will receive disciplinary actions per administrator and may not be able to return to the clinical site, which may result in dismissal from the Nurse Aide Program. Please be aware that we are considered visitors to these clinical sites and we depend on them in order to maintain our clinical site areas. OUR PATIENTS, AT OUR CLINICAL SITES, ARE AT A VULNERABLE STATE AND FOR THE SAFETY AND WELL BEING OF THESE PATIENTS OUR STUDENTS WILL NEVER GO AGAINST ANY CLINICAL SITE GUIDELINE OR REGULATION. OUR CLINICAL SITES HAVE MADE IT VERY CLEAR THAT THEY EXPECT OUR STUDENTS TO HAVE HIGH STANDARDS WHEN IT COMES TO BEHAVIOR ISSUES. THEREFORE IF A STUDENT HAS BEEN GIVEN OSS/ISS FOR A BEHAVIOR PROBLEM, THEY HAVE STATED THAT STUDENT SHOULD NOT RETURN TO THEIR SITE THEREFORE WITHOUT THE ABILITY TO COMPLETE THE REQUIRED CLINICAL REQUIREMENTS A STUDENT WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO COMPLETE THE PROGRAM.

SKILLS LAB: When students are working or practicing in the Lab setting, school provided Lab Jackets are to be worn, with hair pulled back and all fingernail policies adhered to.

All required immunizations per clinical facility requirements must be obtained prior to starting clinical rotations. Failure to comply will result in the inability to complete program requirements. Please be aware these are Clinical Site Requirements and NOT GWHS OR DPS requirements.

NAILS: ALL NAILS MUST BE KEPT CLEAN AND TRIMMED AT FINGERTIP LENGTH. NO PAINTED ARTIFICIAL OR NAIL TIP. WE PRACTICE ALL INFECTION CONTROL GUIDELINES.

ALL NURSE AIDE STUDENTS MUST ADHERE TO OUR INFECTION CONTROL AND FINGERNAIL POLICIES STARTING AT THE START OF THIS PROGRAM.
XII. Consequences
-
If a student is not dressed in accordance with the Dress Code on a Clinical Rotation Assigned Day that student will not be allowed to go to the clinical site and may be at risk of not having the required amount of clinical hours for Program Completion. Students will have to remain at GWHS under the supervision of Administration with a required written assignment while Instructor and other Nurse Aide students are off Campus at scheduled clinical time. They will also receive a zero for that clinical rotation day.Note: There are limited clinical make up days and this could jeopardize being a program completer.

There is 1 scheduled make-up day but Instructors will do everything they can to assist students in making up a clinical day if that student is sick or there is a family emergency or circumstances beyond their control. THIS YEAR OUR PROGRAM HOURS HAVE CHANGED AND WE ONLY HAVE 1 MAKE UP DAY IN OUR SCHEDULE.
XIII. Referral to Year Two 12th Grade Level Policy
In order to advance to the next Dental Careers course level of training, the student must be on grade level, 16 or less absences, maintain High Academics in all classes. Students are to have no Tier II or higher behavioral office referrals. MAINTAINS A MINIMUM OF 2.O GPA
XIV. Honor Cord Dental Careers Program
For a senior to receive an Health Careers honor cord to be worn at graduation, certain criteria must be met.
Requirements:

Less than 10 accumulated absences per year. Nurse Aide I and Nurse Aide II
-
No discipline referrals in any class resulting in ISS or OSS.
-
An overall A/B average in the required Health Career class.
-
At least a 2.5 overall high school GPA.
-
Pass WPR CTE Certification.
-
Recipient of Nurse Aide Program Completer Certificate.
-
Be an active member of the HOSA Future Health Professional.
-
10 or less Tardies per year.
-
Eligible Candidate for the NNAAP Virginia State Board of Nursing Certification Examination.
XV. Infection Control Policy
PRECAUTIONS MUST BE USED TO PREVENT ACQUISITION OF INFECTIOUS DISEASES FROM THE HANDLING OF BLOOD AND BODY FLUIDS BY HEALTH CARE WORKERS.
This policy is mandatory and failure to comply will result in disciplinary action.
Policy Guidelines:
-
All sharp items (needles, razor blades, scalpel blades, stylets,etc.) must be handled with extreme care and must be disposed of in designated puncture-resistant containers. No sharp objects shall be placed in standard trash containers.

Hair must be neat and clean and pulled back off shoulders for safety and infection control guidelines.
-
Gloves must be changed in accordance with all infection control standards.
-
Personal Protective Equipment and gloves must be worn by all personnel performing or assisting with any procedure in which there is a possibility of blood or body fluid exposure (urine, sputum, stool, mouth secretions, vaginal secretions)
-
Bag Valve System or a mouth shield should be used in all cases requiring resuscitation.
-
All items contaminated with blood or body fluids must be disposed of according to agency policy. Linen in proper bags, sharp items in puncture proof containers, and body fluids in the red body fluids bag,etc.
-
Each agency policy will be followed if a needle stick injury should occur.
-
Fingernail should be at fingertip length, no artificial nails or tips, No Nail Polish.
XI. OTHER STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES:

STUDENTS MUST ABIDE BY ALL CLINICAL DIRECT PATIENT CARE SITE POLICY AND PROCEDURES.

STUDENTS MUST ADHERE TO ALL GWHS AND GWHS NURSE AIDE GUIDELINES.

STUDENTS MUST ADHERE TO ALL DPS/GWHS STUDENT CORE GUIDELINES AND EXPECTATIONS

STUDENTS MUST ADHERE TO ALL DCC/DE REQUIREMENTS IN ORDER TO BE ELIGIBLE FOR CREDIT AND COURSE COMPLETER STATUS.

STUDENT MUST COMPLETE AND COMPLY WITH ALL OF NURSE AIDE STATE GUIDELINES GOVERNED UNDER THE VIRGINIA BOARD OF NURSING.

STUDENTS MUST COMPLY WITH ALL GUIDELINES AND POLICIES UNDER NNAAP CREDENTIA STATE EXAMINATIONS.
XVII. CLINICAL / FACILITIES IMMUNIZATION AND SCREENING REQUIREMENTS.

Attend / Complete all clinical facility orientation criteria. (Please note that time spent as an orientation requirement under VBON Regulations is not counted towards your required direct patient care clinical hours.

XVIII. ASSIGNED STUDENT HIPAA CONFIDENTIALITY AND PRIVACY AGREEMENT

Students must comply with all clinical site / facilities HIPAA Guidelines and Policies .
