COURSE DESCRIPTION
Civics and Economics is designed to prepare students to be college and/or career ready. The course scope and sequence has been developed using the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL). Topics listed here reflect the program of study for both face-to-face and virtual (asynchronous/synchronous) instruction. Standards for Civics and Economics examine the roles citizens play in the political, governmental, and economic systems in the United States. Students will examine the constitutions of Virginia and the United States, will identify the rights, duties, and responsibilities of citizens, and will describe the structure and operation of government at the local, state, and national levels.
Students will investigate the process by which decisions are made in the American market economy and explain the government’s role in it. The standards identify personal character traits, such as patriotism, respect for the law, willingness to perform public service, and a sense of civic duty, that facilitate thoughtful and effective active participation in the civic life of an increasingly diverse democratic society.
Civic education also must emphasize the intellectual and practical skills required for responsible citizenship. Students will practice these skills both inside and outside the classroom as they extend their understanding of the essential knowledge defined by the standards for Civics and Economics.

ATTENDANCE
Attendance
Parents of students who are absent must inform the school of the reason for the absence no later than upon the student’s return to school. Absences are excused for the following reasons:
- Illness (if over two days, may require a note from a doctor)
- Required court appearance
- Death in the family
- Religious holiday
- Field trips and school authorized activities; and
- Extenuating circumstances which are determined by the school administration.
Whenever your child is absent from school, please use this Absence/Excuse Notes form to submit your excuse.
TARDY
You are considered tardy if you arrive to class after 5 minutes.
Late Work:
In an effort to make students college and career ready, it is imperative that all students understand the importance of deadlines. All due dates will be communicated with students and parents/guardians, and students will be given an ample and appropriate amount of time to complete assignments. Students are expected to complete all assignments by the assigned due date. Late work will be accepted until the end of the day it was due for full credit.
In order to avoid late work penalties, it is the students' responsibility to closely monitor assignments and due dates, and they must communicate anticipated issues prior to the deadline. Students who have an excused absence are allowed five days per absence to make up the in-class work.
I.W. Taylor’s Late Work Plan Approved on 7/13/23:
All students are encouraged to turn their work in on time. All assignments are left open in Canvas for 3 weeks from the date the assignment was due, per quarter to give students an opportunity to turn assignments in late without penalty for elementary and middle school. However there is a 10 point late penalty for high school students for each assignment not turned in by the end of the third week.
