Welcome to W.W. Moore
"Educating the mind without
educating the heart is no education at all."
W. W. Moore, Jr. Juvenile Detention Home is a 60-bed facility that detains juvenile offenders until their court date. The detention home is a regional facility that serves the city of Danville, Martinsville and town of South Boston. The following counties are also served: Halifax, Henry, Mecklenburg, Patrick and Pittsylvania. The average length of stay for students is approximately 15 days. However, a student may be adjudicated and sentenced to W. W. Moore for a period of up to six months. The education program is a vital component of the detention home.
The education program at W. W. Moore, Jr. Juvenile Detention Home is state operated and supervised by the Virginia Department of Education. The purpose of the education program is to provide appropriate educational services to school age (10-17) students residing in the facility. The education program is designed to provide a continuum of program alternatives to meet the individual needs of each student. Our main goal is to ensure that the educational services that we give will allow the student to maintain and/or advance his/her current level of achievement. In an effort to ensure a smooth transition into and out of the detention home, we will provide instruction that follows as closely as possible the student’s home curriculum, including the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOLs).
We believe in learning for all students regardless of the educational setting. We also believe that all students can learn, although not at the same pace. Furthermore, we believe in the worth and dignity of each student that we teach.
